Preguntas cortas

¿Marvel o Dc?

Dc, because they give royalties from countries like Spain and Italy and France and care for the freelancers more. They are not as like as marvel…which helps me pay the bills.

Regular or limited series (from artist and reader point of view)?

I like limited series because you can experiment more with ideas and don’t have to sell as many books to stay alive. It’s the same for a reader I think…I like to think that the story will one day end and with a limited series, it’s a guarantee.

¿Tomo o grapa (idem pregunta anteriror)? / Single comic book or TPB? (like last question, artist/reader)

Trade, more to read and easier to keep on my shelf…the single comics are messy and all over my house.

¿Coca cola o Pepsi?/ Coke or Pepsi?

Coke all the way. Pepsi is too sweet and not a classic.

TV shows or movies?

Love going to the movies…especially love the big screen and the sound. TV just doesn’t do it for me. If I am home, I usually have to work and don’t have time for TV.

¿Star Wars o Star Trek?

Lol…they are both fun and I am sick of them both at the same time. they are done and gone…on to something new. I prefer James bond

Who did you ’cheat’ to create the Marvel Knights brand? They gave you two very charismatic heroes like Daredevil and Punisher. Where does the idea born?

Cheat? Not sure what you mean. We just looked for a decent name to put on the books that we were doing and the knights idea came up. It’s a classic term. We were given a choice of what characters to choose from and we went with those because they had the most potiential and were the easiest for us to understand and have fun with. The inhumans and black panter were the others.

In the last times, you’ve being working a lot for DC Comics (and we’re very very glad ;) ). Being so close to Quesada as you are, how is it possible you don’t work more for Marvel?

Well, having joe there doesn’t help me one bit because he is editor in chief and cannot play favorites with his friends when giving out work... and for a person like me who creates new characters, marvel comics is a dead end mostly. If you bring in any idea, they own it . With marvel knights they made toys, shirts and such and we never got a penny. The same is not true with dc, that is why I work for them. I love the marvel characters, but as a company, they have to learn to treat the artists and writers better and share in success. With dc, they let you own a % of a new character and again, share in foreign royalties.

Writer, inker, drawer… You’ve done almost everything! What you enjoy most doing?

Sleeping, having sex and vacationing. After that I love to have a good dinner. Oh, and I prefer writing these days.

We guess the best thing you can do if you want the comic book have exactly the look you want is to have the drawer at home, isn’t it?

Yes, I write it and Amanda conner draws it.

You’ve worked drawing/writing/inking a lot of characters in every editorial. Which ones have you enjoyed most? With which one you’d like to repeat? And with which ones you’d like to work in you haven’t done before?

My true loves are beautiful killer, new west, ash, painkiller jane jonah hex, 21 down, and the monolith

Mi ojito derecho son Beautiful killer, New west, Ash, Painkiller Jane, Jonah Hex, 21 down, y El Monolito.

¿Alguna historia que hayas querido vender y que aun no hayan comprado? / Any story you’ve tried to sell and you didn’t succeed yet?

Tons , but each month it is getting easier to do that. As you build up the name, people seem to let you give it a shot a bit easier.

How does it work the Gray/Palmiotti team? How do you divide up the work?

We work together in the same place and its like tennis…back and forth till we are happy. He is my best friend, so its really fun working like this.

¿Volveremos a ver a Ash? / Will we see Ash again?

Not unless Joe q finds time. He doesn’t have much these days babysitting 300 freelancers at marvel comics. It’s a tough job he has and hard to get free time.

Jaja / And talking about Ash, where does the ‘fireworker with fire powers’ idea born? Isn’t it too devious? A burnt-out fireworker? Lol

We cameup with the idea in an evening and figured it out by the next day. I think i came up with the firefighter as a hero while in the shower...i have no clue how it happened.

And talking about funny characters, a hooker in the JLA? Ok, a JLA parody, but you know what we’re talking about… And we must say that The Pro is a great comic book, but you must recognise that it’s risky if you want to publish it in the U.S., seing scenes such as the one with the ‘super-blowjob’ or the one with the hookers walking in single file with dildos in their hands waiting their turn with that client…

We had hoped people would have a sense of humor about the book and most have with the exception of a powerful few. It’s a parody and like all parodies there is a lot of love for the source material. We love the book and its now on its 3rd printing in the U.S., which says to me that a lot of people love this kind of crazy stuff.

21 Down ¿Veremos un final? / 21 Down, will we see an end?

We hope one day, but Wildstorm is not interested in it. We have a full written and drawn issue sitting in my house just waiting for them to change their mind. One day we hope.

What do you feel watching one of your characters in the TV, like Painkiller Jane? Are you satisfied with the result? Is it working in the US? (we must wait to watch it here in Spain)

I like that it’s on TV, but its not my character or the way I would do it. I wrote one episode, episode 13 and it’s the closest, I feel , the show has come to being good. It is what it is, and I love kristanna, but the direction sci fi has taken the character is not the way I see it. The comics are 40 times better and still come out, so I am happy about that.

You’ve worked with a few Spanish drawers. Anyone you’d like to add at your list? How was your work with Daniel Acuña? Would you liked him drawing the second part of the Freedom Fighters?

There are some fantastic Spanish artists I would love to work with more, Jordi bernet being the top of the list for me. they are classic storytellers and understand American comics even more than some of the Americans do. I would have loved having Daniel for the
second freedom fighters, but he took on flash, so we had to look elsewhere.

Ok, it’s been a long way, so our last question: This is the same question we ask everyone we interview. (We like to make fun of the news that come to Spain about him… Only news about him arguing with everybody!! ;)) Have you ever argued with or being criticized by John Byrne?

No, he has always been nice to me and I have only met him a few times. He is a person that believes in himself and his work and what he believes in and will fight for it…right or wrong. I admire the spirit even if I don’t agree with him a lot of the times.
