¿Series regulares o limitadas? // Regular or limited series?

Prefiero las miniseries

I prefer miniseries.

¿Grapa o tomos? // Single comic book or TPBs?

As a reader, I think I prefer TPB, because it´s like reading a book.

¿Coca Cola o Pepsi? // Coke or Pepsi?

Coca Cola // Coke.

¿Series de TV o películas? // TV shows or movies?

Películas // Movies.

¿Stars Wars o Star Trek? // Star Wars or Star Trek?

Star Trek.

¿Cuál es tu película favorita de superhéroes? // Favourite superhero movie?

The first movie that really impressed me was Superman, the very first one.

The initial idea with Strangers in Paradise (SiP) was a comic strip in newspapers. How did it end as a comic book?

Simplemente no funcionaban.

I didn’t have good fortune with comic strips. It just didn’t seem to click for me. So I switched to a longer story so the characters could talk and finish their sentences. That’s when it started to click for me. I still want to try and do a comic strip someday. I’ve thought about web-comics but it’s not the same.

Why did you Start your career on comics with something like SiP, treating such tricky/difficult topics like homosexuality?

I just thought this topic should be addressed. I hate censorship. I hate authority… It was my way of saying: ‘We should talk about this because it’s not a scandalous topic; it’s simply a topic with human beings’. So I tried to write a story at a human being level and you can talk about anything if you do it with respect.

Did you think anytime your SiP was going to have so many issues? That it would have such a good reception? 106 issues are too many…

No, it was just one issue to try to get into business. Then it was going to be just one miniseries, and then I wanted it to be a book. And then, I began to write a regular series because it was popular and… ¡next thing I know it’s 14 years later! And as it’s still popular I just decided I better quit. Otherwise, it would never be a book, and I wanted a book.

Aunque algo has comentado, ¿por qué terminar con SiP? ¿No te quedaba nada más que contar? ¿Querías un cambio de aires? ¿Volverás a ella en algún momento?

You’ve already talked about it, but why end with SiP? Hadn’t you anything more to tell? Did you want a breath of fresh air? Have you thought on returning to it?

I felt like I had established a promise in the beginning, that this is a story about Francine and Katchoo. So Francine and Katchoo’s story was coming to a close and I didn’t want to continue the series just to make work because it would ruin characters. It’s like a TV show that goes on too long. But… it’s strange. Once I thought about introducing different characters. I spent nearly a year thinking about different characters but… who knows…? Maybe someday I could come back and write SiP: The Next Generation (laughs).

¿Qué pensaste cuando recibiste el Eisner?

What did you think when you received the Eisner Award?

That’s a great honour. And my award was handed to me by Will Eisner himself! It was a great night.

¿Lloraste? // Did you cry?

Nada me salía mal. (Risas)

No, the night I cried was the first time I was nominated. I’d been in comics for 2-3 years and it was my golden boy period. Couldn’t do anything wrong. I had four Eisner Awards nominations and two Harvey nominations and… I lost them all… You know, I it was nice to have the nominations but… it was devastating to lose them all… (Funny voice) I collapsed on the floor and cried like a little girl… (Laughs)

Echo is your new personal series. Tell us something about it… What is the comic book about? What can we find on it?

Echo is SiP meets The X-Files. It’s about a woman, named Julie, who gets in trouble with people who are making liquid atomic weapons. She finds one of these weapons and when she discovers what it is, she decides not to give it back. They want it back, they’re not nice, and that’s how it begins the story… She goes on the run, and these people are coming after her and she doesn’t know who they are or where they are so, that’s kind of the story. I was inspired by remembering the testing with hydrogen bombs that scared the scientists. Hydrogen bombs are more powerful and harsher than atomic bombs, and the scientists were worried that the atmosphere would catch fire… Very scary! That’s why they are more dangerous… Atomic bombs ‘only’ devastate one city each time (laughs). Nothing compared to a hydrogen bomb. So I thought ‘What if there’s somebody out there making this awful nuclear weapon?’ We’d all be in big trouble. And that’s what Julie discovers…

Primero Mary Jane love Spiderman, luego Runaways ¿Porque te decidiste a dibujar unas series mas juveniles? // First it was Mary Jane love Spiderman, then Runaways… Why did you decide to write series for younger people?

Everybody talks about needing comics for the new readers, for young people to get into comics, so I believe in that as well. I’ve written for mature readers, but I wanted to do something for the kids too. Also, those comics are fun. It’s like reading a comic from the sixties. It’s lighter on the heart.

Has dibujado los guiones (de bendis marvel ultimate team up 14) y los has escrito para otros (Lady Superme) ¿Cómo llevas el no tener todo el control del comic?

You pencilled Bendis’ scripts on Marvel Ultimate Team up, and you wrote for others like on Lady Supreme. How is not to have control on the whole comic book?

It’s difficult to only write a comic. The first time I tried it was Lady Supreme and it didn’t go well. I wrote the script and the artist didn’t draw anything I wrote… (Laughs). I told them I had an objection and they send the pages back to me and say: ‘Here, write the script to the way we do’. And I said: ‘Oooh… ok’. I was concerned. So I asked Peter David: ‘Peter… How do you do it?’, and he said: ‘The trick is writing a script that doesn’t need art’. From that point on, I would write scripts where if you read the words you understand the story. So that’s the way I’m working with Marvel. I write the story and if the artist can’t grasp the expression, that doesn’t kill the moment. It’s a different way to work.

You started with Antarctic Press (only the initial limited series) and then you decided to self-publish yourself. Why did you do it? At the end of the first volume you came back to be edited by others (this time by Homage) but it only lasted for 8 issues. What happened?

I talked with other self-publishers and they explained to me how to do it. And I had done three comics, and then a TPB and I only made about 2.000$ with the four books. I was a grown man with a family and I need to make a living. So I self-published: I get all the money, but I had to do the all the work. I was willing to do the work in order to make a living. With my first comic self-published I made ten times more money than with all the Antarctic books. When you’re published by others you get about 17%, and when you self-publish you get 100%. That’s why I did it. With Homage… the comic was doing well and I was so busy with the business… Homage offered to run the business for me, and I used that time to establish my own company. When I was ready I got back to publish with my own company.

¿Has discutido alguna vez o has sido criticado por John Byrne?

Have you ever argued or being criticized by John Byrne?

I don’t think John Byrne knows my work. And that’s my problem with John Byrne…
